Because you want to record a different style of music (but can't write it yourself)?
Because you want to establish your own name away from the band (possibly because you are sick of working with the rest of the band after so many years and want to set up your own career)?
Because a record company offered you money to record something while the band was taking a break?

I am sure there are many reasons.
