Most of the solo artists from the 50s / 60s never wrote their own material, there was always writers who wrote for the labels who wanted to have the next big thing. The same went for certain bands who had stuff written for them due to their commercial appeal - ie. The Sweet. The trend has just continued. Why should someone with a great voice not be a singer when they can't write a decent tune? A great example is Danny from Thunder, one of the best voices around, but he admits he is no good at writing a decent tune.
