To keep TL fans from saying things like "this new crap they wrote isn't deserving of the TL name" and other such stuff (which we all know will happen). That way he can say "Well, it's not Thin Lizzy".

They'll probably play under both names at different times. I'm sure they got a healthy offer to come to Australia as TL...
