In the old days I used to do this self-made compilations regularly... actually I did on cassette, not on CD. However, with the arrival of the digital era (MP3..) I think it's pointless to do this kind of thing anymore. Just load the albums to the MP3 player and then create your own playlist from your favorite songs.
