I was talking with Matt from my label about this. His take on it is press coverage. The press will generally talk more about the fact that he's releasing 4 different versions, with different covers, and different tracks, etc and for a little longer than if he just (for example) released a disc of rarities. It gives them more to talk about in blurbs and interviews, more pictures to publish, etc.

I get that, I guess...but it makes it hard for someone who wants all of the extra songs, but doesn't want to have to buy many of the same ones over and over to get them.
