Jay Z always strikes me as a pretty level headed guy, with a keen sense of irony (opening his Glastonbury set with Wonderwall, for instance, after Noel Gallagher had a pop at him).
The problem with Hip-Hop and something it shares with MelRock, is that most of the good, ground-breaking stuff was done over 20 years ago !
