Perhaps because they're overblown nonsense and take themselves too seriously? That's why The Darkness broke, because of the 'Carry On', nod and wink thing they had/have going on.
Traditionally hard rock in all it's guises is shunned in the UK. There was a brief period during the mid to late 80's where it made the charts on a regular basis, but that's been about it. Even now it's still a nostalgic comedy trip looking back for the majority here.
The operatic/theatrical stuff produced by Nightwish doesn't stand a chance, and it won't change any time soon. I'm also not that aware of Nightwish doing massive tours here to get/raise/maintain a profile (although I'm not a fan, so I could be wrong).
