Many would argue that you just need the first 7 albums!
Personally I'd get either "...Beast", "Piece of Mind" or "Powerslave" as a starting point, and eventually the other two.
Plus "Killers", which is by far the better sounding of the first 2 albums (although the songs on "Iron Maiden" are at least as good if not better).
The material on the rest of the first 7 is also extremely high quality, but don't get overloaded. Having said that one of my favourite Maiden songs is "Moonchild", off "7th Son...".
From "No Prayer..." things get patchy, and both Blaze era albums are pretty forgettable IMO.
The newer stuff isn't bad, and there are some gems on all of the reunion albums, but none are "essential".
And there are so many clips on YouTube from the various live DVD's it's pretty easy to find out.
