The norm, as in the kind of music they played for the period.
Mabel were strictly a pop band and, away from the bigger glam pop groups of the decade - Sweet and Slade for example - they were no different to countless other British and European pop bands operating at that time that were aimed solely at garnering chart hits backed by a solid pre-teen/teen female following. Rather like, in a different style of course, One Direction today.
You call them crap because they weren't exactly that accomplished from a musical point of view (because they were just kids after all), but also due to the fact they don't appeal to you from a musical point of view anyway, but that's to take nothing away from how successful they were to the audiences they appealed to and the fact that it gave Mike excellent grounding in order to go forward to produce the kind of music he did to which does appeal to you.
