RE: I couldn't possibly...

I still think it's too easy to sit back and complacently accept the bands that MTV and radio dish out these days. Sure, they have merit. They do have energy, write songs and perform them with a measured amount of ability. What I miss are bands that put out 110% on stage, sang in the HIGHER register (who among the Collective Soul-Creed-Matchbox 20 market can match the vocal range of a Tony Harnell or a Rob Halford?) and actually pulled off fast and technically challenging guitar solos. It's one thing to be open to new things and- trust me- my CD collection features everything from Def Leppard to Deftones- but bottom line is I'm not going to force myself to like something just for the sake of being open-minded and "current". And with so many good titles coming out on Z, Escape, MTM, Frontiers, I would rather spend my last 15 bucks on the new Sign CD than on the new Offspring anyday. I believe in supporting the bands that I REALLY like first and then, if there's any money left over, I'll piddle it away on modern rock or the latest next big thing power pop 3 chord punk ska wannabes. As far as a quiet revolution is concerned, I'm all for that- but the downside is that when nobody knows about the bands you are into at the record store and they give you the same old "we can't get that CD if it's not on _____________ (insert major label/distributor name here)" store clerk B.S., that's not good. And then there are the import prices that, living in North America, I could certainly do without. Thirdly, the sorry absence of AOR on Napster makes it harder to test drive new bands. Just 3 of the pitfalls inherent to this and any other "quiet" musical revolution.
