Whatever works for the bands concerned. Marillion have been doing this for years. I believe It Bites may well have gone down this route, too [although I'm not 100% sure].

As Coco said, it would have to take something/someone extremely special to get me to donate to such a scheme. Although I'd happily pay Vixen not to record another album.
