I'm not sure what you base the claim that grunge had no longevity on? I'm sure that music of that style still persists to this day, but outside of the mainstream, in exactly the same way as AOR does.

I'd say that there are bands out there playing every style of music known to man.....we just don't hear about them because we're not fans of those specific styles.
