AFAIK, the term means "Album Oriented Radio". This resulted from the 80s, when US radio stations started to play more than the singles which were released from an album. Any track of an album had a chance for radio airplay. It turned to "Album Oriented Rock" as this was the type of music and later "Adult Oriented Rock" when the average age of the fans of this kind of music raised ;-)
