Dennis was never the rocker.
Dennis DeYoung brought two things to Styx: great ballads and production. These two things distinguished Styx as an "art rock" band back in the 70s and set them apart from the rest. We all can hear how the last Styx album suffered since Tommy would not let Dennis produce the whole thing.
Tommy and Dennis apparently have never got along. Their internal friction probably is responsible for Styx's success, each giving the other a musical counter point (Dennis' ballads versus Tommy's rockers).
The current edition of Styx is no doubt a great band, but certainly can not be confused with The Classic Styx. The next Styx album I predict will suffer the same fate as the close-but-no-cigar _Brave New World_, except if they get Dennis to produce it which aint going to happen.
