Clearly, you haven't seen the current line-up on tour....
As sad as it seems, Dennis Deyoung's time as a rocker has come and gone...while his theatrical vision and concepts helped prevent the group from being just another rock band in the 70s, by 1980 they were well on their way to completely removing the rock edge from Styx.
If anything, 1992's Edge of the Century was saved from being elevator music by Glen Burtnick's (and JY's) rockier contributions. Furthermore, the addition of Gowan is much needed -- he provides a solid songwriting foundation and ,unlike Deyoung in recent years, can really ROCK.
I look at it this way-- both Glen and Larry have successful solo careers and although being in Styx can't hurt financially, they could still be comfortable in those careers ("no-name" or not). Whereas everything from Return to Paradise onward had all the trappings of a nostalgia cash-in (70s line-up or no), I feel that now they have the potential to create some great AOR again with this talented "new" blood.
With this in mind, I think Styx are no less relevant than a reconstituted Journey, Van Halen or Pink Floyd. They certainly have more to offer than, say, the current line-ups of Yes, Asia or recent (pre-reunion) versions of Survivor...
