What exactly does the success of Santana have to do with Journey - other than the fact that Schon and Rolie played with Carlos 30 years ago? Carlos, and God bless him, just put together - or make that Clive Davis at Arista did - one of the most calculated and contrived records in the history of pop, alligning himself with only the hippest of the MTV hip (Matchbox 20 boy, Everlast, Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill etc.) to FORCE major success. Without these names-du-jour behind and attached to 'Supernatural', no one beyond the Santana core fanbase, which is not that big anymore even though he continued to draw well live while his sales went down the toilet, would've cared. You could've had Glenn Hughes sing 'Smooth' and nothing would've happened.
I think Journey need to get Kid Rock, Macy Gray, the Wu-Tang Clan, and Britney Spears to guest on their new record if they want even so much as a chance at renewed mainstream success. No one at Sony beyond Kalodner gives a damn about Journey at this point, and they don't even have a JK in the UK. That's the sad reality.
