Dave Reynolds was one of Kerrang!'s chief writers in the mid/late 80's and, along with Derek Oliver and Paul Suter (amongst others), was one of the writers responsible for helping the 80's scene develop over here in the UK.
An avid ANGEL fan, Dave also used to work in what was, at the time, the most 'visible' rock specialist shop, SHADES in London.
His enthusiasm for promoting his 'pet' bands/artists is partly responsible for building up some artists semi-legendary status in the AOR world. ie. Michael Bolton (Woops! What happened there, Dave?), Paul Sabu, John Waite, the list could be endless. He was among the first to back Stevie Salas, Shark Island and he was on a personal crusade to break CROWN OF THORNS over here, or so it seemed. With his continual references it was almost taking on mythological proportions before it actually came out!
Actually, Derek Oliver went on to work for Atlantic (or was it Atco?) and was responsible for first signing DREAM THEATER. So they did have a good idea what was going on.
These days of course, with the advent of the web, we don't have to rely on reviewers anymore. We're all reviewers now and can all get our opinions out to the world. Cool isn't it?
Regarding TWO FIRES Jack, I wasn't that impressed at first but it is growing on me real quick. So give it some time and it may just surprise you yet. I do think it will end up near the top of a lot of peoples personal year end charts.
