Western labels are basically a lot more fashion concsious and, like it or not, melodic rock in the form we know it is pretty 'uncool' as far as they are concerned. So, either the Japanese record industry is very out of touch with what's going on in the rest of the world or they are image blind and support the music because of the quality they believe is out there.

What I CAN tell you is the term 'Big in Japan' usually means that the band/artsist sell diddley squat anywhere else! It's not usually used in affection for a band.
