"Our culture--growing ever more permissive--has turned a blind eye towards references to killings, gangs, booze, whores, weed and crack. These are things that weren't said in those days and if they were referred to, they weren't something the average 10 year old could easily access and comprehend."

You must have a very hazy memory of lyrics and music videos in the 80's, because it was all there - the drugs, the booze, the chicks, the cars. Frankly, I don't really hear/see a difference between a Mötley Crüe and Puff Daddy/Diddy song or video. In fact, does the line of a once very popular song "I used to love, now I had to kill her" ring a bell? And do you remember the whole PMRC campaign? This controversy has been going on for a long time.

"The major difference you so neatly sidestep is the issue of lack of parental control--the true defining difference in all of the eras you mentioned. When I started teaching, one parent---or no parent--homes was an inner city phenomenon. Now, it's commonplace in suburbia, as well."

I agree. But even back then a lot of these - as you call them - "cultural icons" came from broken and dysfunctional families. Nikki Sixx states in "The Dirt" that his destructional behavior was in fact the result of his screwed-up upbringing. And most of these guys came from suburbia.

"As a long-time teacher, I'm sick to death of hearing bleeding hearts talk about free speech. I'm nauseated by people who'd want to tell me about artistic freedom. And I'm fed up with ideas that somehow, this all correlates to the 60's, 70's and 80's. I'm fed up with individuals who'd tell me that the power of TV and radio mean nothing on a kid."

Well, and I'm fed up that nobody wants to take responsibility for his or her or their childrens actions. It's a lot easier to blame or Hollywood or Madison Avenue instead. Besides, most Rap and Hip Hop albums are bought by middle class white kids. And they don't go around shooting and killing each other.
