Thanks for the comments, J.C., and you hit upon what gets me most. One wouldn't think that cultural change would actually serve to hamper the efforts of educators, and yet, the black leader you speak of was right on target. NOW MORE THAN EVER BEFORE, kids see little reason to excel in the classroom in the inner city. Granted, there are over-achievers, free thinkers and kids who hail from homes where one or two parents have their priorities in order. But those numbers are dwindling.

Lest anyone think this is a blacks-only problem, I can relate that inner city, lower-economic whites embrace the thug-mentality more than ever. Anyone who believes that the message of the media counts for little should walk a mile in my shoes, and then report back.

As stated previously, I am stunned that middle class America now embraces this music---and not coincidentally, ---this lifestyle. With so much glamour attached to being a hood, a thug, a play-a, a dealer, a gang banger (a hobby which once again is on the rise)---a walk around the mall --for me at least--is a comical experience.
I coach kids in the burbs and am amazed that they see much more promise in 'drinkin' 40's, 'smokin weed', 'findin ho's' and the like.

It's a downward spiral that won't correct itself anytime soon.

We can hide behind the 1st Amendment all we want in this country, but we've poisoned our own kids. We idolize scum. We honor filth. We've definitely 'dumbed-down' and shown our kids that enhancing their minds isn't necessary.

What a great country.
