Hey Frank....

Here's the thing - to me, your opinion (from what I could make out sans punctuation!) is based more on what he is like live, or how good an artist he is as a whole. Andrew's review, on the other hand, is based on a specific recorded work. And there is a difference of course...one doesn't have to do with another 100%. Great artists who rock on stage and have made awesome music do release some duds. Maybe he went the wrong direction, maybe he made a few bad choices, maybe the songwriting muse wasn't there in its best form, who knows? Hey, you were fortunate enough to see him with Journey and he put on a great show...does that mean his new album is wonderful? No, not necessarily .

I'm not saying John's new work is crap or not up to par because I haven't heard it. So I'm not necessarily saying that Andrew is right or wrong because I don't have the basis for that (and of course, because we'd go into subjective territory). However, if you argue talking about the style and songs on "Figure on a Landscape", then maybe you'd have a solid argument....instead of, "John is a great artist, I saw him live, and he was awesome, it's not his fault the state of the melodic rock scene is so bad, etc....". That doesnt have much to do with his new recorded work.

Now here is my preliminary opinion, which may well change, but based on the soundclips I heard....I was a bit bored. And for the record, I thought When You Were Mine was a really good laid back disc. I still listen to it and enjoy it. But I feel that he keeps going further and further into an AC style, mellower and mellower until it's not what you liked about John Waite to begin with. Maybe it was unfair of me to judge it as boring based on the four clips or so I heard, but I thought, "Okay John, you did your mellow-man thing for a few albums and it was great, how about something else now, something a bit fresher?". He's become a different artist, in a way. Which doesn't mean he's not a brilliant songwriter and performer, because he certainly is. No one is arguing with that...it just felt a bit too re-hashy to me.

But I may be wrong....I'm still going to buy the album and find out for myself. Like I said, I've enjoyed his mellow side, but I don't know if another disc like that would be welcome.

Cheers,
Jack.
