It's music's job to alienate the old

Time for a reality check, cashable at any bank in America.

AOR is gone, folks. (Its mainstream days are long over.) And you know what? There's going to be music in the new decade that will make us all WISH TO GOD we had even nu-breed or power pop or alt rock.

Here's an example of my own experiences. The late 80s were a tough time for me. Kansas, Survivor, Journey, Night Ranger, Triumph, The Cars, Loverboy... they all broke up at the end of the decade. That's a lot of grief for one twenty year old to bear.

Well, I blamed the glam bands. The Warrants, The Poisons, The Wingers for replacing my favorite AOR bands.

Now, it's 2001 and I'm kicking myself for begrudging the Hair Metal scene, because ANY of those bands are 99% better than what's on the radio today! Which makes me wonder if I'll be longing for Sum 41, Blink 182 or Eve 6 by the end of the 2000s. And wishing I had been more open-minded in 2001.

It's music's job to alienate the old. I don't agree with it, of course. But anyone utopian enough to think that image, attitude etc. can save an already dead genre- to paraphrase Judas Priest (circa 1982)- has got another thing comin'.
