Well, this is not as it seems... there's still lot of europe fans out there... for example. In 1999 they released a compilantion named Europe 1982 - 2000. The CD went gold in 2 weeks in sweden, and it was top 5 selling in 4 different countries. Anyway, I have a theory. I think that they are re-releasing to see if it would be worth to make a reunion (I mean financially). Bon Jovi did the same before releasing crush, and seeing the succes of the 80's comming back, I don't think sony wants to miss the chance of having one of the top bands on their bill. Look at it this way: Bon Jovi sells 8 million albums of Crush, The cult is selling really good their new CD, guns and roses will have a CD out in the next months (aprently is on print right now), Poison is having a great succes with their tour and they are back on Emi. So isn't it worth it to sign europe again?

Also, Sony sees the point that during this 10 years of silence, the perception about europe in the people have change. Before they were a band for girls, and in this 10 years, the perception has change, and now they have a good reputation beetween musicians and people in general...

Just a last tought about what your question:

- Was the cult very popular before releasing their last CD?

I think not..
