Some of my picks.

Sticking with just the AOR/Melodic Rock genres to be stubborn. Listing just the stuff from the big European labels for now because I usually just trash them:

The Quest - Change
I only know of one other person on the entire planet outside the band or label who ever raved about this. It's basically progressive pop - a mix of AOR and progressive rock/metal - Styxish in the vocals, Dream Theaterish in the musicianship without getting all wankery.

Big Bad Wolf - s/t
I don't know how long this sat around in a vault or whatever, but the production was definitely juiced up before release. This is fairly bland hair metal cock-rock type of stuff, but it is great fun. Good melodies, decent enough writing, OTT vocals, and great musicianship. Crystal's got a hold on me again.

Crown of Thorns - everything
So sue me. I like it. Van Halen attitude without Van Halen stupidity. Basic blues rock done well.

John Elefante - Defying Gravity
Great songwriting, great musicianship, stunning production, incredible vocals, and the type of message I like to hear. It's still one of my favorite releases over the last couple of years. People generally hate it because it's too lite or too Christian or too "country".

Emerald Rain - Broken Saviours
Well, I do like early Harem Scarem so what would you expect. This album is completely and totally unoriginal, but I don't care. The songwriting is average at best, but I don't care. It's an enjoyable listen for me and that's what matters.

Hugo - s/t
Cheesy, predictable, and lame. Normally, all the ingredients necessary to make something totally overrated. In this case it works for no other reason that the fact that it is delivering exactly what the average Valentine/Open Skyz fan wanted to hear. Still a fun disc to hear and one that I've seen panned on too many web sites and message boards to be called overrated.

There's a short list. There's some other good stuff from those labels, but they don't qualify as underrated to the extent that these do.

Joe
