Heavy Harmonies Song of the Week: VU - My Rock

Over the weekend I was lucky enough to be in the right place at
the right time, and walked away with 60 Christian hard rock and
heavy metal discs. Since this is a collecting specialty of mine, it
was an opportunity to not only fill quite a few holes in my
collection, but also try out some bands I'd not heard (or heard
of) before.

So, throughout the alternative horror that was the 1990s, where
were the melodic bands like Stryper and Whitecross? Answer:
Underground. I *thought* I was up on who was doing melodic
hard rock during the late 1990s, but evidently I missed one: VU.
I picked up 2 CDs from them in this batch, All I Need Is U
(1996) and Just As I Am (1999). Whoa! At times a spot-on
match for vintage Stryper, with some Mutt Lang-esque choruses
thrown in for good measure. I've listened to both discs now, and
they kick some serious ass. Any fan of '80s hard rock should
pick these up. I don't know if these 2 albums constitute the
entirety of their discography, but unfortunately their website is
now defunct, so I'm guessing the band is no more :( At any rate,
here's a taste just to whet your appetite: My Rock (4.6MB).
