Ufortunately Danny it doesn't always work that way. There are many people out there in the world with money who sign talented people to deals big and small and push with all their might. The truth is that if the music doesn't fit into the format it won't get played. The station will take the money and not play the song, or if they're an ethical station they'll just refuse the money because they know they will look foolish trying to play something that isn't happening at the moment. It would take the power and money of someone like Tommy Mattola to push through a new idea to a big station. Or maybe a very progressive programmer who was willing to roll the dice because he loved it so much.
We all have these ideas that talent will prevail, and many times with perserverance and business smarts it does, but one cannot be naive. If you really want to break something that is totally out of the pocket for what is happening musically, then it better be amazing and have something very fresh and exciting about it, or you better have millions of dollars to spend that you don't mind losing if nothing happens. Whether you agree or not, Nirvana was a very exciting band at the time they came out. They were fresh and original and they had catchy songs and they went against the clean, pop metal thing that was in my opinion digging it's own grave at the time. Too many bands and not enough good ones. Hair, hair everywhere and not a brain cell to speak of!! The eighties were over and people wanted to hear lyrics that actually said something about the state of things and not empty party songs. Anyway, it will take that kind of talent, talent as big as Kurts to do what you are talking about and then maybe there will be change. Hey we were all pissed at Nirvana when they came out because it killed our career's, but I did recognize Kurt's talent then and I recognize it now. It was VERY, VERY special. It is both inspiring and depressing to know that there are people that talented out there. It makes me want to work that much harder to create something special. I don't think I have yet. Not really. But maybe someday soon I will. I'm sorry folks, but we need to raise the bar a little higher. We praise mediocre art(music, film, T.V. whatever) far too much. I think musicians, including myself, accept mediocrity in their own music way too much and the fans do as well because, well, what choice do they have. A good song is not necessarily a well played and well recorded song(I don't care how much time is put into it, if it's a turd it will be a good sounding turd). A good song could be recorded like @!#$ and still come through and make you feel something. It has to speak to the center of your universe in some way. Whether it makes you sad, happy, excited, or whatever. Or have we just become a jaded de-sensitized society of robots who have lost their sense of what is "special".
That's my two cents for the night.
Sweet dreams rock kids.
Tony
