"I don't doubt this is an insoluble argument..."

Well, you're probably quite right there! With regard to the first part of my post, the reason there were so many question marks in that paragraph was because I would genuinely like ansewrs to the questions. I don't work for a label, so I don't have access to the levels of artistic control that exist. It just seems that some bands, like U2 (I hadn't read TH's post that mentioned them before) have been able to change at will from the beginning with what appears to be the full support of their label. Or is that not really the case? Again, I don't know, does anyone?

At the risk of continuing my 'more questions' theme, isn't it the labels responsibility to ensure that their artists product reaches as many people as possible? That is how the fanbase grows, right? My argument about the smaller labels is that by their very nature distribution is bound to be less encompassing than that of a major. If labels can't get bands who sound exactly the way they WANT them to sound, ie their specialist genre, across to the masses, what chance a band/artist who challenges? Think about bands who are pretty much unknown to mainstream rock fans, yet are core elements of the current AOR scene. I agree that it's probably because they are terminally unfashionable that the majors won't touch them, but let's ignore that for a minute!
By returning over and above the investment through sales (in a traditional music biz way) the artist should develop enough kudos with the label to enable them to stretch out more. The labels responsibility to distribute correctly and extensively still remains for this next more 'experimental' album.

In order to generate awareness that the artists are even out there, the sales need to be 'visible'. Therefore, in the UK at least, those sale need to be through a chart return retailer. Any other sales are invisible. To the public those bands don't exist, even if they've sold thousands of records. The question is then do smaller labels not want these bands to become more popular for fear that Warners will come knocking and want to take their baby away?

The FM thing. Taken in the context of 1989, with the music they were making and the weight of Sony behind them, don't you think they should have made it? Irrespective of whether you like the material or not. I suspect that was because the big machine doesn't have the dedicated staff that the smaller one does. Which brings me back to a point I made in a previous post that what is required is an amalgamation of the two. The A&R of N&T combined with the distribution of Warners or T.E.N. (The Entertainment Network, formerly Sony) for example.

Ultimately however I suspect that the problem lies in the combination of the words music and business. One intangible, unpredictable and dependent on an increasingly fickle public, the other demanding specific levels of return irrespective of quality or quantity.
