I don't disagree with you that there may well be more challenging music made by giving the artist freedom to create as they choose but why should an organisation that exists to at least feed Mr Ashton (we are going to allow him that or should he starve for the "art"?) pay for that. If artist "X" or indeed artist "Honey Tarnell" has some masive new way of musical thinking that we're all invited to enjoy, why should record label "Y" or indeed "Then&Not Then" put unrecoupable money into that? Would my favourite artists benefit from a multi million $ recording budget? Yes. Are they going to get it? No. Why ? Because not enough people think they're worthy of it. Like it or loathe - it's the Backstreet Boys and Phil Collins that people want to hear. Music of all sorts has never been more accessible so it's not about "corporate control / access to airwaves". Any useless git can make arecord these days and anybody, thanks to the web, can hear / buy it. If people are still buying those things - it's cause they want to.

Anyway why should "T&N" pay for this mythical "HT" to make his new industrial/reggae crossover (under the name by the way of a band that were actually renowned for barbershop / punk crossover) when all the "HT"s think nothing of getting a few thousand (or hundreds of thousands) of $ from the man at Coors, Bud, McDonalds, KFC.... Or another way - why does artistry only work in these "artists" favour. When they want to pay the bill they are not demeaning themselves by taking a corporate buck ... or do they walk in to a McDonalds jingle session and say "Hey Ronald.. I've decided to this one in the style of a castrated duck ... more challenging! Don't you think?". Or do they just think they've got power over the "little" guys at "T&N"???

As for exhuming the corpse of FM to wave over us. never did a band so brazenly make the music they didn't like for the sake of making the music they thought would get them a nice juicy wage. Their first 2 albums stand as some of the most blatantly "thought out" and pre-planned AOR albums of all time and their ultimate failure was well-deserved. If you're putting forward FM as a band who had the passion etc .. then dear help us! You then go on to contradict yourself as you firstly want bands to do it for the "artistry" but presumably want to leave them for dead if "after 5 or 6 albums" they are still on a small label? Surely their artistry transcends such quibbles as sales figures / commercial success?? And as for the "revolution of the fans" bit .. maybe the problem is just that Mr Ashton - unlike me - has a hard understanding of the £ involved and where they go and let's face it a glorious failure of a label that ends up going under but promoting its passion is no good to anyone....

I don't doubt this is an insoluble argument but your lines of thought just left me more confused than before...
