With respect John, I think the latest Kansas album is excellent and has to be taken in context. I have every Kansas album and whilst it's no "Leftoverture" or "Point of No Return"(clinical masterpieces) it's absolutely light years ahead of the Elefante/Morse era Kansas and the very average Power. Somewhere... is a return to their "classical era" sound and I for one am extremely satisfied!
I agree with you that Steve Walsh's solo album is awesome and quite experimental in parts. Have you heard Jeff Watson's album with Steve Walsh singing some tracks. It's great!
Further to the new AOR debate. I believe many of the current releases like ThE Sign, Kharma,Newman etc. are as good as any of the so called late 80s/early 90s classics - eg The Storm, Giant, hardline - double eclipse etc.
In some cases my estimation of some of the older classics has gone down - for example "Diving for Pearls" which whilst still very good to my ears now has a thin sounding production and is "guitar light" in parts. There will always be dross in any time period, but to my ears the current AOR scene is in a very healthy state, if not commercially then in terms of quality overall. Cheers.KAOS FAN!
