Portrait failed because of one simple reason. Mr. Kalodner did not understand that this music went underground ! Simple as that. He had great luck in having a Sony distribution within the US, but even with that the sales amounted to very interesting levels for independent realities (look, 30,000 Ratt sold are a great result these days!) but close to nothing for the budgets he (or Sony) invested in the venture !
Also he concentrated himself ONLY on the US market forgetting completely that the independent melodic hard rock labels are making business 90% out of Europe and Japan....

Simple as that...

And... BTW I happen to like quite a lot the new talents he discovered (especially Mars Electric!).
