Hi, Geoff, Japanese music industries work that way. Artists sing, be on the TV dramas, write songs for the commericals. It looks like Ameirican counterpart emulated Japanese style. I can easily point out mirror image artist such as Britney Spears, American version of Utada Hikaru, Backstreet Boys, American style SMAP.
