You can actually check out a whole set of soul/ r and b classics that Journey did for the King Biscuit Hour in the late 70s. A couple of the tracks are on bootlegs (Hold On I'm Coming is especially cool) and I think there's a version of 'Good Times' on the boxed set. You're right Andrew Steve Perry does go on about his love of soul singers in several interviews and you can hear it all over 'Street Talk'. On the subject of vocal styles ( I know it's not real AOR) but just listen to some Jani Joplin live and then hear Roberet Plant, particularly on 'Since I've Been Loving You'- it's frightening, right down to the 'bu-bu-bu-babies'.
On this subject, everyone says Hugo sounds like StevePerry, does anyone else think he actually sounds more like Rik Emmett????
