At the time Eddie was revolutionizing guitar riffs, other guitarists were doing the same. Van Halen's rivals on the LA club scene were a band called Quiet Riot. No, not the fools who scream "Bang Your Head". The original band, featuring a guitarist by the name of Randy Rhoads.

Why did Van Halen get signed instead of Quiet Riot?

Simple.... David Lee Roth COMMANDED attention, and he got it. And while you were paying attention, you noticed that the guitarist was damn good too.

Randy Rhoads, unfortunately, had a boring stupid @!#$ named Kevin Du Brow as a frontman. Just as boring and lame as he is today, only with his own hair in 1977. When Randy teamed up with another legendary frontman, Ozzy Osbourne, then the world noticed him.

Steve Vai played in various bands for years, but when did YOU first hear of him?? I'd bet it was 1986, when he played on Eat Em & Smile.

Imagine a Twilight Zone - Star Trek parallel universe situation. You are in LA, it's 1977, only this time David Lee Roth is the frontman for Quiet Riot and Du Brow is singing for Eddie Van Halen's "Rat Salade" (remember it was DAVE who named the band Van Halen after all, so in this universe, that never happenned)

You are a WB record exec. Which band do you sign? I can guarantee you which one is going to make the best first impression.
