Compositions

In my copyright and recording contract classes in law school, the professors did not want us refering to a piece of music as a "song," but rather "compositions." In fact, I'm fairly certain that, among the 2 dozen recording, publishing and producer contracts that are currently on my desk, there is no reference to "songs." Of course, this is just from a legal perspective. Ultimately, it's just a matter of opinion. Like the question, "what is heavy metal/melodic rock/etc," there really are no right answers, only opinions.
