The new Gotthard is anything but balladesque. There are two pretty straight forward ballads (Heaven, Say Goodbye) and a couple of smooth acoustic-style tracks like Lonely People and Reason to Live). But other than that, it's a slick rock album from beginning to end. I'm not familiar with too much of Gotthard's earlier work, but I do have Open and can say that Homerun is a far better CD. The songs flow better with more consistancy.

Highlights:
Everything Can Change is a classic rocker with great Coverdale-ish vocals from Steve Lee.
Take It Easy is a great cover of the Andy Taylor hit from the movie American Anthem.
Come Along is a fun rocker with a more hooks than a fishing trip.
Homerun is a smooth bluesy song with more of a Whitesnake sound.

If you liked Open, you should definitely check this out. It's along the same lines, only smoother and tighter. The songs here are just better quality. Homerun is the first gem of 2001.
