Rick USED to write good ballads

Anyone who's heard "Wait for Night" will know that Rick used to be able to pull off a white-knuckle ballad. "Treat Me Gently in the Morning" and "Million Dollar Face" are certainly testimonials to his sensitive side, but why he never continued writing them is beyond me!! Especially in the 1980's, the golden age of the power ballad. (Where would Air Supply, REO Speedwagon and Chicago have been without them?)
