Rick Springfield and other acts who suck at ballad

I was just listening to some Rick Springfield CDs from the archives and I realized how poor he is at writing ballads. Barring the fact he never had a hit single that was a ballad, I just think his slow stuff is hopelessly weak. Not that he's alone... there are lots of artists who can't write a power ballad to save their lives: Ratt, AC/DC, David Lee Roth, Treat... the list is long!

Does anyone (i.e. Andrew) know why Rick Springfield has a case of ballad phobia??
