Ya know, it wouldn't surprise me to hear that Steve Perry, as well as Dennis DeYoung, swore to themselves that their respective bands wouldn't get anywhere without them. Now, that both bands seem to be getting even stronger since their departure, they probably feel the need to retaliate and grab a piece of the pie. The timing of both just seems much too convenient and much too conspicuous (if that is indeed the case with Journey).
I'm sure that both men *are* receiving some kind of royalties even though they are no longer in the band or performing with them -- I couldn't imagine the rest of guys ever being able to go on without some kind of compensation/arrangement. A friend of mine was told by someone in the know that Dennis' lawsuit was not directed at the other guys' use of the name, but only a way to secure what Dennis feels he is rightfully entitled to. I read the lawsuit myself and there's much more to it than that. It's also not quite as black-and-white as you would think either. There are 4 other members (JY, Tommy, Chuck, and John's estate -- which was presumably passed over to Chuck) who have just as much right to the Styx name as Dennis does.
We have been told that Dennis is not getting the interest that he thought he would with his solo gigs. I saw the show and, although I did enjoy it and am extremely glad that I got a chance to see it, I thought it lacked a lot. Even though they are not of the same style, I recently saw the Trans-Siberian Orchestra (who had half the size of Dennis' orchestra), and they blew his show away... Big time! It was truly an experience. (Do see them when they tour for their newest. I believe they said they would start touring around March.) Hmmm, gee, I can't say I've seen any announcements for a Steve Perry solo show lately either...
I hope all can be resolved without too much bloodshed. These are certainly not ideal situations for these men, but I hope everyone can come out of it happy and able to move on with their lives.
