Devin Townsend's Ocean Machine and Infinity projects are both incredibly amazing. Another good one is the first, self-titled VAST cd. All three of these discs will knock you over with their wall of sound approach. For pure sonic perfection, two older discs that you must check out if you are looking for some kind of ultimate high-end equipment reference discs are Brasse - Pawn and Glass Hammer - Perelandra. A side project of the Glass Hammer guys titled Wyzards - The Final Catastrophe is another great, older work that is harder edged rock with less keys. The Saviour Machine - Legend discs are incredibly well-produced if you can get past the overt Christianity, the depressing nature of the music itself, and the somewhat cheesy baritone vocals. If a teeny weeny little bit of growling background death vocals don't annoy you too much, After Forever's - Prison of Desire is a tasty chunk of gothic metal perfection with an incredibly great female lead singer. If you are looking for pure and unadultered cheese-fests in the production department - you can't go wrong with Ayreon's Into the Electric Castle or Universal Migator sets, the newest Symphony X - V disc, and anything by Rhapsody - those fine purveyors of all things unicorny. If you are looking for a very well produced Rush semiclone with an excellent female vocalist, I would recommend Persephone's Dream - Moonspell disc.

I hate to say it, but you can't really go wrong in terms of production with any of those newer POP pop major label groups such as Backstreet Boys, Celine Dion, NSync, or Savage Garden.

If you are strictly looking at the official melodic rock underground as approved by the board's official committee for narrow tastes, the only one I can recommend (in terms of production) over the last couple of years is John Elefante's Defying Gravity.

Good Luck!

Joe (the non-sarcastic on this board Joe)
