Peter,

First of all, I'd just like to point out that I try not to take these lists to seriously because they really are meaningless and bear no importance to me as a music fan.

Having said that, I'm not putting down the album or the band themselves. While I'm no fan of either, I certainly lived through the 'grunge' era and I understand their impact on the world. I like some of the stuff that you mentioned from that time (Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, etc). However, I am just wondering if 'Nevermind' deserves to be listed as the #2 Rock & Roll album of all time? I mean, Nirvana is now listed amongst Hendrix and The Beatles. That seems strange to me.

I always felt that grunge was just a phase, like punk, metal, etc. I mean why aren't Metallica listed, or Alanis Moorisette. In my opinion, Nirvana changed the world about as much as GNR changed it in 1987, or Bon Jovi, or Def Leppard around the same time (Appetite, Hysteria, and Slippery capture that era quite well I think!). Those groups all sort of made metal/hard rock acceptable to the masses, the same way Cobain made alternative music acceptable to a mainstream audience. On the other hand, you won't see too many of those 'hair bands' listed on the best-of lists. I guess the music wasn't serious enough.

Somebody had mentioned that if Cobain didn't kill himself, Nirvana would be in the cut-out bins right now. I don't think that's true, but I don't think people would be immortalizing Nevermind at this point. As a matter of fact, just like every other band, Nirvana'a popularity began to wane around the time In Utero was released. The album wasn't selling as well, and grunge was fast becoming an oversaturated market.

I will continue to accept that people today think that Nevermind is a better album than Zeppelin's IV or Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, but I'll never come to understand it.

Robert
