Rock is...

I'm having a hard time figuring out exactly what is precisely wrong with the application of the word rock to the Backstreet Boys music. There are adequate elements of rock present in their music to correctly classify it as rock.

Sure, it is pop also - but that is more a function of sales than style. Today's popular music must combine elements of many different styles in order for it to generate the sales necessary to garner the semi-derisive pop label. I hesitate about using the word today only because this has always been true. I don't really see much of a difference between the Backstreet Boys and any standard raved-about band popular with this particular board. I'll use Alias as a generic example.

Alias is basically simple structured love songs with production qualities common for their time frame marketed toward the hard-rock / hair-metal consumer of the late 80s or early 90s. More than Words Can Say reached #2 on the pop music charts despite the fact (or due to the fact) that is an entirely by-the-numbers, cheesy love ballady, trite fluff pop drivel tune with nothing the least bit original or earth-shattering in the whole damn song. If it were released 10 years later, it would sound exactly like everything released by the Backstreet Boys (or worse.)

If you strip away all the modern production qualities of the music of the Backstreet Boys and replace it with production qualities of the 80's, they would sound exactly like Toto or any other schmaltzy wimp or power ballad band of the time. The basic truth is that their (I know it isn't their's) song-writing falls squarely into that Diane Warren-esque school of verse-chorus, love song slop that many of us loved in the 80's when done by the great bands of old. As far as their ability, I'd rate them far higher than just plum shitful alleged musicians such as Poison or Warrant or dog-torturing vocal hacks such as John Payne or Bruce Springsteen. As far as their style, I don't think that their mostly adult contemporary music is all that far from either Journey's Trial by Fire or Arrival which people on this board are nearly certain to love.

I wouldn't call it a deterioration of the popular music scene as much as it is a logical continuation. If the Backstreet Boys embarking upon a rock tour is a damning indictment of the whole music fraternity, where does that put stuff like those awful Kalodner Karapola metal revival rock tours? And, surely, a BBoys tour can't possibly suck any worse than a Stones tour. That's just not possible!
