Hey! John Payne's an amazing singer!

Okay, Mister Pomp and Eric.. here's where I disagree. John Payne is one hell of a singer. As I see it, when Asia boldly stepped into its second decade, they needed a slightly rawer voice to suit the changing times. Everything was clean and perfectly pitched with Wetton. In the early to mid '90s, the rising popularity of harder edge music (Metallica, Nirvana, Soundgarden) meant that a voice like Payne's was better suited to the musical climate. Just like Paul Laine helped update Danger Danger, or Steve Lukather's voice helped toughen up Toto's image which, after Jean-Michel Byron's stint with the band, was caught at the corner of Faggot Ave. and Wimp Street.

I'm not saying Asia's sole intention was to try to be trendy. I just think they wisely re-invented themselves. Payne is to Asia what Sammy Hagar is to Van Halen. Payne's style shouldn't be compared to Wetton's. Wetton, don't get me wrong, is one of the best singers to ever stand behind a microphone, but he comes from a
'60s/'70s progressive background. Payne, clearly, is from the school of harder-edged '80s rock.
