That whole looks vs. musicianship thing

...after looking back a bit...I felt like I had a little more to say..

Unfortunately, there are all too many times that looks ended up counting for why a band got signed, say...several years ago. I remember one of my exes, who was a booking agent, telling me that one of the reason that they'd consider looks in the equation when booking gigs for bands was because when the girls would show up at the bar to oogle the band, guys would come to oogle the girls. It's an interesting equation, but oddly enough, it sometimes worked...it brought people into the venue, and the people would by drinks. Drinks bring in money, which could pay the band and the club at the end of the night.

Notice, however...that a lot of the bands that were signed more on looks than musical talent don't exist anymore....and you occasionally find their CDs in the 99 cent rack at the used shop..if you're lucky. Sometimes it got chewed by the neighbor's dog cause someone threw it out the window because the musicianship reeked so bad.

The record labels, sadly, still tend to go with that old formula. Especially the big ones...I mean...why do you think stuff like the "boy bands" and the multitudes of "Britney Spears" stuff sells so much? The advertising, emphasizing on those "pretty people". But looks will only last for a short while. It's what music is out there in their names that will be remembered, or quickly forgotten.

Heh..it's why a lot of melodic rock is still out there, playing away..even if it's in smaller places.

-hopes my rambling made sense to somebody.
