If you want to talk pure AOR/ melodic hard rock, the LA Glam scene isn't the best place to start. By 1986-1989, the Pretty Boy Floyds, Faster Pussycats and Poisons of the world emphasized image over music. As a result, by 1987-88, many of the pure AOR bands (Survivor, Night Ranger, Loverboy) fell on commercially hard times. Luckily, Poison managed to retain some melodic rock elements ("Fallen Angel", "Ride the Wind") and that's why they've perserved today. I don't mind some of those video-friendly, glam bands but I think they did hurt the melodic rock scene. Let's face it: if your hair wasn't teased up 12 inches from your scalp or your name didn't have an x or a z in it, you were uncool.

To me, it's all about the music. In 1981, you didn't have MTV to fall back on. You had radio play and concerts. That meant the songs had to be there. It's easy to do a splashy video for a crappy song. Just like it's easy to round up a few big names, call yourselves a "supergroup" and then pull some tired riffs out of your collective ass cheeks in hopes of pulling a fast one on Joe Record Buyer. Well, I'm not that gullible. And for that reason, Shadow Gallery is next to Sharon's "Edge of Time" on my CD wall. I guess my tastes are more along the lines of Mike's than yours, Kris!
