>> It's just that being in a independent band you come in contact with "labels, dist. companies, this guy that guy", so you have to be careful. In turn, not everyone is gonna be receptive to your music. <<

That's absolutely true, you DO have to be careful of who you deal with and unfortunately a lot of the time it's the sharks that get to good bands before they come to legit companies. When the bands finally do get to the legit companies they're overly suspicious because of being burned in the past and they're extremely distrusting of a company that isn't affiliated directly with a major label or the like.

>> I'm new to the Internet, new to this genre of Melodic Rock. I think UltraSound is a great idea. But you have to make ideas happen. The people I've met so far over the net-they truly love the music. And Mr. Tedder is right, paying $150 for a song on a comp cd is a good deal. We've paid $450 for one song that was the last track on the cd. But--we got more exposure out of that cd making the rounds, so there you go. You learn as you go. My hat's off to guys like Andrew, Dave Tedder, Nicky Baldrian, Ryan Northrop at Metal Mayhem, who helped us out
immensely and didn't have to- means alot to a band that just plays for the love of it. <<

You're absolutely correct, you DO have to make those ideas happen. It's no use sitting around saying, "If only ..." "If only ..." gets you nowhere and if you don't put your money where your mouth is you're just going to run in circles and wear yourself out. Things aren't just going to come to you, you have to actively pursue them.
I've been in the business side of the industry for twelve years now (started out at Enigma) and I've been running my own marketing company for eight years. Most labels I've been hired out by to do their marketing have absolutely no idea of what it takes to effectively "market" an album, be it a glam album, AOR album, death metal album or what have you. They're afraid to spend a LITTLE bit of money (I'm not even talking $3,000 here) in order to take co-op advertising, print posters and flats, make postcards, etc., etc., etc.(hell, most of them haven't even wanted to print PROMO PHOTOS) Then if they don't sell 10,000 copies of a particular album they get pissed off and blame it on everyone else. What are you to do though?? You throw ideas at them and they shoot them down. You ask for more than 100 promo copies and they think you're ridiculous. See where I'm going with this???
As for UltraSound, it's "gonna happen", I promise that. It WILL be the event that people are looking to go to in the States every year. Whether those people are melodic rock supporters, power metal supporters or heavier even (how about ALL OF THEM COMBINED?!?!?!??) remains to be seen ....
