>> Dave - You have raised some valid points concerning Melodic Rock and Ultrasound. Perhaps is is an organazation problem on everyones part? I know there are 5 Progressive Rock festivals here in the US alone and most sell out before the show date. There are two Glossy Progressive Magazines "Progression" and "Expose", as well as numerous web sites based here in the US. As far as Power-Prog Metal/ Doom/ and Black Metal scenes- these guys are hungry, and the underground scene is really developing, and pushing boundries. As harsh as this music is to a lot our "seasoned" ears, this scene is going through a Renaissance right now. How many glossy (store ready) AOR mags exist here in the US? Zero. <<

You're absolutely correct - the prog / power / death and black metal fans are hungry for their music and it shows. I've heard nothing but TERRIBLE things about all of the Metalfest shows yet they consistantly pull in over 1,000 people at the drop of a hat. Silly things like Witchery and Sentenced playing ten minutes and having the power turned off on them because it was too late - bands playing right next to each other at the exact same time ... Still, Jack is packing them in. I went to the March Metal Meltdown thing in 99 and it was pretty badly run, although the people over at Mazur PR tried to help out and clean up the mess it had become.

>> But for the average Metal fan, not so. They network, tapetrade, create their (sometimes disgusting) Fanzines a get into it because it's all thats happening, so when Rotting Christ, or Opera IX, roll into town- it's every man for himself. I think this could apply to what you are seeing with Ultrasound. Metal fans are showing interest because it's just not available, and if a Festival of this type is available, out comes the Duffle bag with a copy of "Pit" under thier arms and it's off to the show, wherever that might be. <<

Yeah, we've done a lot of marketing for indie death metal bands and there are some magazines I just refuse to service simply because of their names. And yes, I'm completely with you as far as the metal fans showing interest. I just wonder why the hard rock community doesn't show the same enthusiasm??? I'm not saying, "Hey, make me rich!!!" because, for one thing, there's just no way that's gonna happen in this day and age for a melodic hard rock event. CMJ, SXSW, the old Foundations shows and others are all about "community" and people coming together to make something happen. In turn, that's also the way the Metalfests are run for the most part, just much, much less professionally and without seminars and stuff. The community feeling IS there though ....Something that seemingly isn't the case with melodic rock, at least as far as the States is concerned, unfortunately.
