Dave - You have raised some valid points concerning Melodic Rock and Ultrasound. Perhaps is is an organazation problem on everyones part? I know there are 5 Progressive Rock festivals here in the US alone and most sell out before the show date. There are two Glossy Progressive Magazines "Progression" and "Expose", as well as numerous web sites based here in the US. As far as Power-Prog Metal/ Doom/ and Black Metal scenes- these guys are hungry, and the underground scene is really developing, and pushing boundries. As harsh as this music is to a lot our "seasoned" ears, this scene is going through a Renaissance right now. How many glossy (store ready) AOR mags exist here in the US? Zero.

Which goes back to the "Bar Band" scenario. I can't go to a bar, and hear Venom, and Bathory covers even If I wanted to. Oh sure, one of the "Hip" clubs downtown will bring in a Hardcore bill once every couple months and they usually sell out. Bars are for selling Booze, and creating a good time, so they bring in an Melodic Cover band. Why 'cause it's positive and all the 30-45 year olds can get loaded, and spend money -thinking they have a chance to get laid. It's everywhere on a Friday night. But for the average Metal fan, not so. They network, tapetrade, create their (sometimes disgusting) Fanzines a get into it because it's all thats happening, so when Rotting Christ, or Opera IX, roll into town- it's every man for himself. I think this could apply to what you are seeing with Ultrasound. Metal fans are showing interest because it's just not available, and if a Festival of this type is available, out comes the Duffle bag with a copy of "Pit" under thier arms and it's off to the show, wherever that might be.

I really think Melodic Fans are jaded here in the US. Journey, Loverboy and Foreinger are still staples on the radio, and seem to tour often. Plenty of Bar bands doing Firehouse covers, so why bother? Take it away, off the radio, and out of the bars and perhaps the Bathory, ELP, and Journey fan might find common ground.
