Back in the 80's, early 90's the recordingbudgets where a lot bigger.
It was not unusual with recordingcosts of 100.000-400.000 $. Today most bands in the scene have to manage between 10.000-40.000 $. This is very important to remember. When you have big bugdets you can afford to hire the best producers as they did in those years (Mutt Lange, Beau Hill, Keith Olsen, Ted Templeman, etc.). Most bands today have to produce themselves or hire a producer that not quite are in the same league as the mensioned above.
Another important aspect is that the bands often had songwriters helping them with the songwriting. Like Desmond Child who has helped Kiss, Bon Jovi and a lot of other artists.
On the last Bon Jovi record they hired Max Martin who has written and produced songs for Britney Spears. I dont think any of the new bands could have gotten that possibility, simply because there are not enough money in it for the songwriter/producer.

Many of the "old" songwriters who wrote for the hard rock bands earlier have now moved on to the "new" music (Corrs, Britney Spears).
