<Faith Nation. I'm pretty sure they weren't mentioned, positively, negatively or in comparison to any of the other bands by anybody in this thread until you brought it up. If you're involved (or were involved) with a band do you have to mention how you feel about them in relation to every post you make? This will make for a somewhat unwieldy post next time anybody from N&T, Z or elsewhere posts as they will presumably have to justify their remarks in the context of every band they've ever signed. >

What struck me was that someone who has obviously been working with a band which was very clearly influenced by the 80's sound, picked on bands whose roots obviously are in the 80's or even 70's. Nothing more nothing less...
So if someone of the labels mentioned above would make a similar remark about the current generation of AOR/Melodic Rock bands being derivative, like Eric did, I would find that strange, yeah.

<Or are you just one of these people who doesn't like to see anything new criticised?>

I'm afraid I don't get this one. I assume you meant "old". In that case, no I don't mind people criticising anything. After all it's all just a matter of opinion. Good music is good music be it from the 70's, the 80's or the 90's. Dare happens to be one of my all time favorite bands, so obviously I hear something that Eric doesn't.
About the popularity thing, that both Eric and Surfpunk mention, I don't see what that has to do with the quality of a band. Dare might be hardly a blimp on the radar, as long as it's good it's good. Over where I live (Holland) there's almost no rock being played on the radio as the masses prefer to listen to all kinds of other stuff, like technotrance and such. Does this mean I should go out and buy that trash? Excuse me, but I don't think so...

But like I said, it's all a matter of opinion. You won't find me calling you names because you love powerpop or new country or all that stuff, 'cause I hear good things in those too. But I have a preference for the older sounding stuff.
To me music has nothing to do with "moving on" or "getting left behind", it has to do with feeling.
Just like when you find the one true love of your life. You don't mind her being the same person for the rest of your life (and don't start on me on how people change, I'm just trying to tell you how I feel about this :-) ), because you just love her for who she is. You look at other girls occasionaly but in the end you go back home with her, your one true love. That's how I feel about the whole AOR/Melodic Rock thing. Hope that explains it to you. If not... too bad! :-D

See ya,

Fred
