I think that the use of growls or what ever you want to call them, when used for effect or a way to enhance a song are usually on the whole a clever way to interpret a songs lyrics. For some reason even though I'm a card carrying member of the AOR Mafia, I've found over the years that cookie cutter vocals can and do when used correctly float my boat. But too much of it imho spoils albums.
Opeth have long been a band I have admired and I've seen them quite a few times and can honestly say they don't play or put on bad shows, no matter if it's clean or dirty vocals that are used.
